Should You Have a Beware of Dog Sign

Sent to me via email, this photo made my day.

Although this photo all in fun, should you post a "Beware of Dog" sign?

Seriously, it is hard to find an answer for this. Having a sign posted on your fence does not make you less liable if your pet has bitten someone. In some cases, it puts up a flag that you have an aggressive dog.

As new homeowners, we decided that it was a good idea to have a dog to protect our home. Our first dog was a German Shepherd mix. He was protective, though not aggressive. We posted a "Beware of Dog" sign to the fence.

Then one day, a neighborhood (troubled) kid, also a relative to my husband was teasing our dog. I told him to stop, but he continued. He then tore back the skin of his finger with a stick, making it bleed. He said, "Your dog bit me!"

I know he didn't, because I watched it all play out.

A few months later, out insurance company told us that we had to put our dog down because of the biting incident. Fortunately, for our dog, he was very sick with a heart condition and died prior to this.

Do "Beware of Dog" signs protect you? In my opinion, the answer is NO!

To train a dog, it is best to start when they are puppies. Not all dogs come into a person's life when they are a puppy. Our dog Buddy came into our life when he was 18 months old. Coming from two broken homes and soon to be euthanize at the Human Society, he found us.

For the first few months, Buddy had abandonment issues and acted out when we were away. He looked guilty when we came home. Nevertheless, there was this "I don't care" thing about him, waiting for us to take him back to jail.

Meet Pearl Cat

The cat named Pearl Phelinepoli is a very famous cat. It is obvious that she has a great personality. Pearl Phelinepoli has her own Facebook page. She even has her own blog called Pearl Cat and Her Family.

Do you think Pearl cat is spoiled? After all, she is one cute cat with a bit of a cross-eyed look. At least in some of her photos, but personally I think she is making faces for the camera.

I love dachshunds! They are so cute with their short legs, long body, long snout and they hop when they run.

When my sister-in-law was living in an apartment for more than a year waiting for the divorce to be finalized, we took her dog Trixie in to live with us. She was a very fat dog with her belly touching the ground. By time my sister-in-law was able to take Trixie back, this little wiener dog was a lean, mean, barking machine.

We didn't want to see her go and she was offered to live with us for good, but my sister-in-law needed Trixie more than she knew. We knew that they belonged together. Trixie is now in dog heaven.

Celebrate Your Dogs at Christmas Time

I am a dog lover, in fact I should say I’m an animal lover except for snakes as I really don’t like them at all, but that’s another story. My dogs are a part of our family and that’s why I think it’s important that they enjoy the celebrations with us.The first dog I ever had came into my life when I was a tween and was an Old English Sheepdog named Digby. There are so many stories that I can tell about him, he came into our life just before Christmas one year and I think about him most Christmases.

A great way of celebrating the canine members of your family at Christmas is by hanging Dog Christmas ornaments on your tree. When I hang up an Old English Sheepdog Christmas Ornament on the tree my daughter asks me to tell her about Digby’s first Christmas when he thought we’d brought him an internal toilet! I also share lots of other stories and sometimes we even get out the photo album so that she can see photos of him.

The first dog my hubby and I got together was from the SPCA in New Zealand and she was called Shelly. Shells was a cross between a Bull Terrier and a Fox Terrier and appointed herself my guardian whenever my hubby wasn’t home which led to some very funny stories including a former Mr New Zealand bodybuilder too scared to come into the house because of a puppy who at that stage only just reached my knees when she was on two legs and at full stretch!Shells was still alive when my daughter was born and when she left us my daughter was so upset as she had never known life without Shelly. It was a couple of years before I could even think about looking for a Christmas ornament to celebrate her part in our hearts – what sort should I get? A Bull Terrier Christmas ornament or a Fox Terrier Christmas ornament as we looked at them it was evident that we would get her a bull terrier one as there was one that was a dead ringer for our little Shell Bell.

The first Christmas that hubby and I had as parents (to the dog) convinced my hubby that he had definitely married a ‘barmy pom’ as I had to find a Christmas present for Shelly. “But she’s a dog,” was the protest – guess who won?Every year we give our dogs a Christmas gift and they get very excited about it. At the moment we have two dogs – our old girl Kahlua and our little man Roman.

Kahlua appointed herself my daughter’s guardian as soon as I brought her home from the hospital and would get between her and myself or my hubby if we raised our voices at her. “ua” was the first word my daughter said – not “mum”, not “dad”, but “ua, ua, ua” and Kahlua would run up to her and see what she wanted!Kahlua’s mum was a Rhodesian Ridgeback, her father is a mystery as her mother decided to go out for a walk and came back pregnant! Kahlua looks just like a Ridgeback though and when she’s no longer with us to unwrap her gift at Christmas time I’ve actually got the perfect Rhodesian Ridgeback Christmas Ornament to get for our tree – it’s one that I actually made myself from a photo of her and I think it’s the most gorgeous Ridgeback ornament you could get.

Funny Cockatiel Showing Off for the Camera!

It all started when a friend was moving and the new apartment wouldn't allow them to bring their cockatiel, Juanita. So, Juanita became our pet bird. She had a bit an attitude and she seemed to miss her owner. After we had her living with us for awhile, we decided that she needed a mate. So we bought a young male breeder, hoping to get her sprits up and eventually see little cockatiels flying around.

We no longer have our cockatiels, though I do enjoy seeing some funny videos about them. I found this video from keven1217 on YouTube pretty funny. Rocky is really showing off for the camera.

Why Did the Cat Go Up the Ladder?

This is Jasper, Carol G.'s cat. She claimed he claimed up there to get into the attic. But listening to the video suggestion otherwise. "Jasper, I put got you up there on top of the ladder." You be the judge. :)

Perhaps Jasper is up on the ladder to avoid the dogs below. OH, they are harmless. Just a few pet articles. Plus some pet clothing and inspired pet tags. Only the best for our pets! Give them something to bark or meow about.

Jeanie tells the story of their beautiful dog Raven. She was a pound dog intended for their son. A fluffy black chow and (possibly) Schipperke mix.

Just six months old when they recued her from the shelter and her death for she had already stayed as long as the shelter was allowed to keep her and due to a euthanize sentence the following day.

This story is a happy one after the lost of Jeanie's dog, Raven.

No one can ever replace the dog they had known and loved for many years. It is never an easy decision on if there should be another dog in the family to fill the void. Jeanie had grown up with pets in her life. To not have a furry family member really was unthinkable.

In the search to fill the void, they found a good-looking German Shepherd from one of her son's friend.

Just like Jeanie, we too have a shelter dog. He has been a wonderful part of our life for more than 7 years. Buddy is a German Shepherd. We rescued him from our local Humane Society. Two other families had already discarded him. Buddy was kept in a cage in a back room, that could be viewed from a window viewing into the other room. He was in this room because we were told that he had a socializing problem with the other dogs

No other families had shown an interest in Buddy and he was getting close to the day of being euthanized.

We owned a Ferret for 9 years, named Roxie Lady. She was a petite albino ferret with pink eyes. For being an albino ferret and sick for the last 3 years of her life, she lived a very long life.

Dancing Merengue Dog

Have you seen this video of a dog dancing the Merengue? Animals are so much smarter than we give them credit for and I always enjoyed watching pet tricks on TV. I found this video on YouTube that originally was posted on dlisted.com

Her name is Carrie from Chile. According to the website, Carrie should be on Dancing with the Stars. I have to agree. I have never seen anything like this. I am amazed at how long she can stay on her back legs and dance for over 3 minutes. She never lost a beat and seems like a happy dog.

Buddy the German Shepherd

Meet Buddy
Buddy is our 8 year old German Shepherd. We rescued him from our local Humane Society. He was 18 months old then and quarantined from the other animals. We were told that he was not sociable with other dogs.

After a period of getting to know Buddy, we brought him home.

He gets along great with the neighbor's pugs and my sister-in-law's dogs. Trixie the Dachshund, (may she rest in peace) and Ringo the Border Collie. Ringo is very much alive and loves attention. (Read more by clicking on the link above).

Ferret Toys and Accessories
Ferrets are curious animals and want to discover everything. Our pet ferret, Roxie Lady loved her toys. Many of her toys were ferret and cat toys. She liked toys that had little bells and squeaky toys. She even had a toy ferret that made different sounds. Every time this toy would make a sound she would jump up and down as in a little dance.

One of Roxie's favorite toys was the tunnel toy. The longer the tunnel, the more she enjoyed it.

When we went camping, everyone loved the little white ferret on the leash.

Bringing Home a Ferret
Before we had the dogs (Buddy and Trixie), there was Roxie Lady, our albino ferret. We bought her when she was a 6 week old kit from the breeder. Among the litter of 8 baby ferrets, she was one of two albinos and the runt of all the ferrets.

Buddy is a Celebration Dog

Every summer we celebrate the anniversary of the day we took Buddy home from the Humane Society. Back then it one had to have at least three supervised visits before taking home the pet. A background check was performed along with recommendations from the family's vet.

Buddy was also in a separate area from the other dogs. He did not socialized well with other canines. This made his future look bleak to a person just walking through.

He was our dog the first time my family seen him.

Our local Humane Society has changed since. Now anyone can walk in and take a pet immediately. Perhaps it is the large number of animals coming in their care. It was extreme when we wanted to adopt Buddy. But this is another extreme in my opinion.

Still, we would consider adopting our next pet from the Humane Society.

Do you have a Dachshund?

Weiner dog, hot dog, sausage dog or Doxie are all nicknames for the Dachshund. These dogs were breed in Germany around 1550 to 1850. They first appeared in the United States in 1879.

The word Dachshund means badger dog. They were given this name for they were fearless in burrowing down small holes to flush out small prey and even going head to head with badgers weighing up to 40 pounds. This breed's loud, high pitch bark alerts hunters of the location of the prey. The Dachshund also has a keen sense of smell.

The Dachshund comes in three sizes: standard, miniature, and kaninchen (which is the German word for rabbit.) They also come in three variations: smooth coat (short hair), long hair, and wire-hair.

History of the German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is considered to be one of the newer breeds of dogs. 1891 became the start of the breed that we know today. A group of shepherding dog enthusiasts in Germany formed the Phylax Society with the intention of creating standardized dog breeds in Germany. The society disbanded after only three years in 1894, due to internal conflicts regarding the traits that the society should promote; some members believed dogs should be bred solely for working purposes, while others believed dogs also should be bred for appearance. Though unsuccessful in their goal, the Phylax Society had inspired the vision of how the German Shepherd was to emerge.

At this time, Capt. Max von Stephanitz, an ex-cavalry captain and former student of the Berlin Veterinary College was one such ex-member. He believed strongly that dogs should be bred for working. He became the acclaimed father of the breed. He had long admired the qualities of intelligence, strength, and ability found in many native sheepdog breeds but had yet to see one which embodied all of his ideals. Recognizing the shift away from herding, Max Von Stephanitz ultimate plan was to breed an all purpose working dog. While visiting a show with a friend in 1899, he saw a dog that impressed him greatly to all accounts that he purchased the dog and promptly formed a society, the Verein Deutsche Sch'ferhunde, which, in turn, created the Schutzhund Trials. The trials were a breed test for the German Shepherd; any dog which did not pass the test was prohibited to breed. These trials are responsible for how quickly the German Shepherd's working abilities were advanced. This was a milestone in the breed's history and marked the beginning of a new era for it. From this date the German Shepherd as a specific breed had arrived.

The dog that von Stephanitz purchased was called Hektor Linksrhein but was later named Horand v Grafeth by Max von Stephanitz. Horand was quickly used in many breeding programs. He became the dog that best exemplified the goals of early breeders. Horand was declared to be the first German Shepherd Dog and was the first dog added to the society's breed register.

Horand's most celebrated son was Hektor v Shwaben. Hektor was inbred with another of Horand's offspring and produced Beowulf, who later fathered a total of eighty-four pups, mostly through being inbred with Hektor's other offspring. Beowulf's progeny also were inbred and it is from these pups that all German Shepherds draw a genetic link. It is believed the society accomplished its goal mostly due to Von Stephanitz's strong, uncompromising leadership and he is therefore, credited with being the creator of the German Shepherd Dog.

Later, as a result of von Stephanitz's energetic campaigns on behalf of these dogs, German Shepherds were used extensively during World War I as messenger dogs, rescue dogs and guard dogs. In little time British, French and American soldiers discovered the German Shepherd's remarkable qualities. As a result, some servicemen took the dogs home. From that moment, the breed's popularity grew by leaps and bounds outside Germany.

A Dog's Dictionary & Guide - Only a Dog Could Understand

Leash: A strap that attaches to your collar, enabling you to lead your owner where you want him or her to go. Make sure that you are waiting patiently with leash in mouth when your owner comes home from work. This immediately makes your owner feel guilty and the walk is lengthened by a good 10 minutes.

Dog Bed: Any soft, clean surface, such as a white bedspread, newly upholstered couch or the dry cleaning that was just picked up.

Drool: What you do when your owners have food and you don't. To do this properly, sit as close as you can, look sad and let the drool fall to the floor or better yet on their laps.

Sniff: A social custom to use when you greet other dogs or those people that sometimes smell like dogs.

Garbage Can: A container your neighbors put out weekly to test your ingenuity. Stand on your hind legs and push the lid off with your nose. If you do it right, you are rewarded with food wrappers to shred, beef bones to consume, moldy crusts of bread and sometimes even an old Nike.

Bicycles: Two-wheeled exercise machines, invented for dogs to control body fat. To get maximum aerobic benefit, you must hide behind a bush and dash out, bark loudly and run alongside for a few yards. The rider swerves and falls into the bushes, and you prance away.

Thunder: A signal the world is coming to an end. Humans remain amazingly calm during thunderstorms, so it is necessary to warn them of the danger by trembling, panting, rolling your eyes wildly and following at their heels.

Wastebasket: A dog toy filled with paper, envelopes and old candy wrappers. When you get bored, turn over the basket and strew the papers all over the house. This is particularly fun to do when there are guests for dinner and you prance around with the contents of that very special bathroom wastepaper basket!

Sofas: Are to dogs like napkins are to people. After eating it is polite to run up and down the front of the sofa and wipe your whiskers clean. If there are people sitting on the couch just include them as a handy wipe.

Bath: A process owners use to clean you, drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently.

Lean: Every good dog's response to the command "sit," especially if your owner is dressed for an evening out. This is incredibly effective before black-tie events.
Love: A feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction, shared by you and your owner. Show it by wagging your tail.
